Contractor Insurance Checker — Does Your Certificate Hold Up?

Check whether your insurance certificates contain what every major pre-qualification scheme looks for. Insurance is checked on every application — get it right before you apply.

What Your Insurance Certificate Must Show

Policy holder name matching the registered company name
Employers' Liability (EL) — minimum £5 million
Public Liability (PL) — minimum £2m–£5m (varies by scheme and buyer)
Policy number (unique reference)
Effective date (policy start)
Expiry date (clearly visible)
Insurer name and contact details
Business activity description covering your trade

Common Insurance Certificate Issues

Certificate in trading name, not registered name

Every scheme checks that the insured entity matches the applicant's registered company name exactly.

Policy has expired

An expired insurance certificate is an immediate fail on all schemes — no exceptions.

EL cover below £5 million

CHAS, SMAS, Constructionline, and SafeContractor all require EL cover of at least £5m.

No Employers' Liability at all

EL insurance is a legal requirement for businesses with employees. Absence is a critical failure.

Wrong business activity class

If the certificate covers office activities but you work on construction sites, it may not satisfy assessors.

Why Insurance Is Checked on Every Scheme

Insurance is mandatory on every UK contractor pre-qualification scheme without exception. Expired, mismatched, or insufficient insurance certificates are the most common reason for outright application failures — often on the first check before any other evidence is reviewed.
